Cerebral Palsy Rehabilitation: Evidence-Based Treatment, Motor Learning, and Functional Intervention

Develop practical clinical reasoning for rehabilitation after cerebral palsy or high-risk status has been identified. Four recurring cases connect meaningful goals with task analysis, intervention selection, active practice, and reassessment. Topics include hand use, mobility, strength, motor learning, tone and musculoskeletal management, adjunct therapies, equipment, family routines, pain, and referral. Emphasis remains on functional activity, participation, comfort, and sustainable care.

Learning Objectives

  • Apply Active Motor-Learning Principles: Use task analysis, active motor-learning principles, graded assistance, and intervention-specific dose reasoning to support a meaningful functional goal.
  • Compare CIMT and Bimanual Training: Select between CIMT and bimanual training based on the child’s affected-hand capacity and two-hand performance needs.
  • Select and Reassess Functional Interventions: Choose and reassess strength, mobility, balance, and endurance interventions according to the barriers limiting daily tasks.
  • Evaluate NDT/Bobath and Adjunct Interventions: Compare NDT/Bobath and common adjunct interventions against the evidence supporting active, task-specific practice.
  • Explain Roles and Limitations of Supportive Interventions: Describe the goal-specific roles and limitations of stretching, casting, orthoses, tone management, and postoperative rehabilitation.
  • Integrate Participation-Focused Supports: Incorporate seating, standing, assistive mobility, and feasible home practice into participation-focused plans.
  • Select Outcomes and Identify Referral Indicators: Choose goal-matched outcomes and recognize pain, functional decline, and musculoskeletal findings that warrant treatment modification or referral.
